Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black father and a white mom. She was raised primarily with her mom's family. She shared that when she was a kid, she was viewed as unwelcome by her peers due to the colour of her skin. The family was struggling financially and had to move 16 times to pursue her father's job. Russell spoke out about how despite the difficulties, Russell said that she had always been creatively inclined as a child. She wanted to become a dancer, and later to become an artist. Russell was just 18 when she took her first acting class. She borrowed money from her job in order to purchase a car and drive to Los Angeles to audition. She would go back to work once her savings ran out , before the audition process. The process continued for four years until she was finally offered her first big television appearance.
